Strong Gender Balance Favors Women Lighting Designers

Gender parity will not only be achieved, but will tilt slightly in favor of women, who will represent 55% of participants compared with 45% men. In a field historically rooted in technical disciplines, that stands out as a notable strength of IALD Enlighten Europe 2026.

One panel will place female entrepreneurship firmly in the spotlight: “Glowing and Growing: Tales of Entrepreneurship in Lighting.” Scheduled for Thursday afternoon, June 18, the session will bring together four prominent speakers. The message is clear: this is intended to be a central topic of the conference, not a side conversation. The panel will also offer a valuable comparison between the European and North American markets.

United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States Lead the Way

The United Kingdom stands well ahead of the field with 11 speakers. Among the British participants are teams from Foster + Partners, 18 Degrees, Light Collective, and Into Lighting.

Germany and the United States follow, with five representatives each.

Host country France ranks only fifth, with four participants: Concepto, Wonderfulight, and the closing keynote speaker, who had not yet been announced at the time of writing.

After reviewing the chart created with Anthropic’s Claude AI below, it turns out there are only four French speakers taking part in the IALD conference, not six. That is a disappointment for me, as it would have been a good opportunity to practice speaking English in public.

Today’s Key Themes in Lighting Design

Six major topic areas will each be explored across three sessions, reflecting a clear effort to create a balanced program centered on today’s most relevant issues in lighting design:

  • AI and digital technologies
  • Sustainability and the environment
  • Professional practice and entrepreneurship
  • Urban lighting and public space
  • Cultural and religious heritage
  • Industry forums and professional meetings

A second group of themes will each be covered in two sessions:

  • Control systems
  • Museum and architectural lighting

Finally, several topics will be addressed in a single conference session:

  • Health and well-being
  • Art, design, and research
  • Education and pedagogy

International Symposium of Lighting Design Practitioners

With more than 80% of speakers drawn from lighting design firms, the conference is clearly dominated by practicing professionals. That positioning has been consistent since the earliest editions of IALD Enlighten. Held every two years in different regions of the world, the gathering is intended first and foremost as a symposium “by designers, for designers.”

Even so, the academic community accounts for 10% of the conference presentations. Meanwhile, manufacturers and suppliers take part only as event sponsors.

As the International Association of Lighting Designers, the IALD has made this organizational choice deliberately.

Speakers Who Are IALD Members

Of the 36 speakers, about one-third are members of the IALD. At present, that represents 12 lighting designers among the full roster of presenters.

Ronald Kurtz and Charles Stone II also hold the FIALD distinction. In the association’s terminology, they are members of the IALD College of Fellows. According to the IALD website’s membership categories, this designation recognizes distinguished members for their achievements and contributions to the profession. “Acceptance into the IALD College of Fellows recognizes the achievements of and honors a model architectural lighting designer who has made a significant contribution to the international design/build community. Fellowship also acknowledges outstanding contributions to the IALD as an association.”
